Never Underestimate the Gospel’s Power

Adapted from a prayer letter by Evandro and Erica da Silva, church planters in Brazil.

The village of Quatros Bocas lies in Brazil’s eastern Amazon region. The name means “Four Mouths,” referring to its position as a crossroad to four towns. It’s a crossroad of religions as well. The town is famous for being the third-largest Japanese colony in Brazil, and it has its own Buddhist temple. Catholicism holds the strongest influence in Quatros Bocas; however, Protestant churches are represented also. Sadly, although the town is full of churches, they teach a false or watered-down gospel.

More than ten years ago, God put a burden for Quatros Bocas on the heart of missionaries Evandro and Erica da Silva. In 2016 they planted a church focused on the Bible and a clear gospel message. Very soon this crossroads town became a crossroads of new life.

Firstfruits

The first couple to attend the da Silvas’ church were Elilson and Sandra, who are now active members. Elilson invited his mother, Maria, so she could hear the message also. The seeds of the gospel landed on good soil in Maria, who was saved, baptized, and discipled. She in turn brought her mother, Benedita, who is 84 years old. Benedita also embraced the gospel and has grown steadily in Christ.

Opposed to the gospel

Over time, many of Elilson and Sandra’s family members began following the Lord and joined the church, including Sandra’s son and daughter-in-law. But one relative always stood opposed to anything to do with the Christian faith: Benedita’s son, Neurivaldo. He was severely addicted to alcohol and wanted nothing to do with Christ. Benedita could only pray and watch helplessly as Neurivaldo continued to reject the Savior who could transform his life.

The impact of a mother’s prayers

Ultimately, Benedita’s prayers proved that no one is beyond God’s reach, even a seemingly hopeless case like Neurivaldo. Through a series of events that tormented his soul, he saw his need for life change. In desperation, Neurivaldo walked over six miles into town in search of a pastor. When Benedita found out, she immediately called Evandro, who quickly came to share the gospel with him. Neurivaldo’s heart was ready. That same day, he accepted Christ and has been faithfully attending the da Silvas’ church. The change in him is evident, and he is even memorizing Scripture to quote in the church services. Never underestimate the power of the gospel and the Holy Spirit’s work in hearts.

“Our prayer is that this letter may encourage you to keep praying and keep serving the Lord wherever He has placed you. It may take time, and there will be ups and downs, but God is faithful to complete the good work He has started in us.”
