Hope in suffering
Published: May 19, 2021

Can you hear the groaning? Romans 8 speaks of all creation groaning under the weight of our fallen world. That groaning can take the form of civil unrest and wars or natural disasters like earthquakes, floods or even the coronavirus pandemic.

For 50 years, Baptist Mid-Missions’ World Relief fund has helped missionaries and churches meet people’s physical needs. It’s a pattern established by Jesus himself: When we help people with urgent physical needs, their hearts soften toward their eternal needs.

Here’s how it works

When crises occur, missionaries assess what they can do to provide food, household supplies, shelter, or other needs. Baptist Mid-Missions works hand in hand with missionaries to create a relief plan with accountability for the funds’ use. Relief is offered to believers and nonbelievers alike. The assistance is always offered with Gospel presentations given in appropriate ways and timing.

Current examples include—

India: a missionary family is assisting medical doctors to create a COVID-19 emergency clinic to help impoverished people.

Brazil: A missionary couple is providing food boxes to help widows, single mothers, and families struggling with COVID-19 lockdowns, layoffs, and job losses.

Peru: missionaries are working to provide oxygen tanks for virus patients.

St. Vincent: after the country’s April 2021 earthquake, a missionary helped replenish church food pantries and has offered relief packages of bottled water and food.

Ethiopia: World Relief funds enabled missionaries to buy baby formula when the trauma of war and relocation affected many families.

Far-reaching impact

These ministries make an impact within BMM ministries and beyond. In May 2020, record rainfall surged into Midland, Michigan, causing “500-year” flooding. Baptist Mid-Missions worked with Calvary Baptist Church in Midland, pastored by BMM Council member Dan Dickerson. After the church offered assistance to their community, they invited those they helped to a special presentation. After hearing the Gospel message, 20 people stepped forward to give their lives to the Lord.

World Relief is a core component of missions. But as the world’s groaning increases, our funds are being depleted more rapidly. We need partners to give one-time gifts to refuel World Relief so we can send assistance when it’s needed most. We’re especially seeking ongoing World Relief donors to help us be ready when disaster strikes. Even small gifts make an impact.
