Africa

Land & People

South Africa is the southernmost country on the African continent. Its climate is temperate, due to being surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

The great majority of South Africans are black Africans, but people of European, Asian, and multiracial ancestry also make up the population. With its many races and 11 official languages, South Africa is often referred to as the "Rainbow Nation."

The country's modern history was shaped by European settlers, particularly the Dutch, who first came in the mid-1600s. These settlers became known as Afrikaners, and they came to dominate South Africa's politics and agriculture. South Africa's constitution offers comprehensive protections for its citizens, including equality and freedom of religion and expression.

Religion

A large push toward freedom of religion has given equal footing for many religious voices within the country, including those of Islam, Hinduism, humanism, and the interfaith movement. Most South Africans adhere to some form of Christianity. As with the country's population, its Christian community is a melting pot of denominations and perspectives. The number adhering to conservative, biblical Christianity is relatively small.

Past & Current Work

In 2010, Jim and Hope Smith brought the ARC (A Refuge of Compassion) Ministries from their previous field of Zambia to South Africa. The Smiths have been serving refugee orphans in the context of a local church-planting ministry. Herb and Janet Hunter joined our South Africa team in 2017 and are working in a church-planting ministry in the southeast part of the country.
