I wonder what was going through Barnabas’ mind. He had witnessed the power of the Holy Spirit in the salvation of thousands. He had prayed with fellow believers for boldness in proclaiming the gospel in spite of fierce opposition. He had witnessed his brothers and sisters giving generously in the early days of Christ’s Church.
He may have asked, “But what have I to give?”
Acts 4 describes this formative time when believers prayed earnestly and gave generously. At the dawn of the Church, Barnabas held a non-cash asset: land that he owned that perhaps had been in his family (vs 36-37). He sold the land and gave the proceeds, joining many others who were of “one heart and one soul” (vs 32 ). They recognized the great value in giving to the Lord as the Church was established.
All kinds of assets can be redirected to the Lord’s use for ministry impact. Imagine farm equipment, real estate, or almost any non-cash asset funding Great Commission work! Rather than remaining as an item on a balance sheet, our possessions can serve eternal purposes: funding a Bible translation project through Bibles International, building a seminary or orphanage, recruiting new harvest workers, or even opening a new field for gospel advance.
