What’s Next?

It’s finally happened. I’m an official missionary!” New missionaries often leave on a high after completing BMM’s onboarding training in July … but reality sets in.

Until they’ve raised enough support, they must still work full-time jobs. They wonder how they’ll juggle work demands with designing a prayer card and display, creating a presentation, setting up a website, writing ongoing prayer letters, preparing testimonies and sermons, developing children’s lessons, initiating cold calls to schedule church meetings—and did we mention weekend travel for those meetings? Whew!

In a very real sense, they’re starting their own small business as they challenge others to join their support team. They may be highly skilled at Bible translation, counseling, medical work, or caring for children—but fundraising, setting up a website, or calling pastors they’ve never met? These challenges are especially daunting for single missionaries who face them solo.

But What Can I Do?

1. PRAY: We can’t say it enough: Pray-Pray-Pray. These missionaries have enormous potential to push back spiritual darkness, and their adversary is poised to discourage or stop them altogether. It takes gritty faith—Hebrews 11 faith—to step into so many unknowns and to stretch themselves for the sake of God’s calling. But it’s that very faith and boldness they’ll need for their future ministries: to initiate relationships with strangers who need Christ and to persevere in spite of intense challenges.

2. INVITE: Invite them for meetings. Make them feel welcome and take an active interest in their ministries. Maybe your church can take them on for support.

3. GIVE: And you can give. Buying equipment, ordering materials, and purchasing a travel-worthy vehicle, along with gas and maintenance, require a large up-front cash outlay. Love offerings are a big encouragement.
