Divine Interruptions

I am old enough to remember analog television that we received through a small antenna on top of the TV. Quite frequently we would endure someone awkwardly breaking into what we were watching to say, “We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you this very important message.” While such interruptions were not initially welcomed because they paused what we were enjoying, typically we discovered that the interruption was of great significance.

When it comes to missions, some people experienced the same thing. They had been faithfully serving the Lord in very different vocations when God “interrupted” things in their lives and called them to the mission field. The Lord did this because He had something of great significance for them to do—reach the world with the gospel of Christ!

Divine interruptions are just God being God and redirecting our lives to use us in ways that we may never have imagined.

Several times I have heard Dr. David Strope, veteran pastor and BMM Council member, state the following:

“Heavenly Father, you have every right, and need not ask my permission, to rearrange my life at any time in any way in order to fulfill your plan for my life’s influence for your glory. I lay my life on the altar as a living sacrifice—holy, acceptable to God, which is my reasonable worship.”

Divine interruptions really aren’t interruptions at all. They are God being God and redirecting our lives to use us in ways that we may never have imagined. And the only appropriate response is to surrender. Is the Lord doing something like this in your life? Are you willing to follow wherever His will may take you?
