For the Joy Set Before Them

That’s how the Bible describes the Christian life. Many have already run, people like Abel, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, and Joseph. Their races were all marked by faith—believing God and fulfilling His purpose for their lives.

For all of us who are running this race of faith, we fix our eyes on Jesus. His life was poured out to bring salvation to the world, and He did it for the joy that was set before him. And so we follow His example and look to His same reward. As we carry His gift of salvation to the world, we do so for the joy set before us.

We each have a role in this race. Some run by praying for the advance of the gospel. Others run by giving so that missions has resources necessary to move forward. And God calls some runners to go as His ambassadors. Whatever your role, run your race with faith and endurance—joy is at the finish line!

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

—Hebrews 12:1-2
