When Elliot and Ruth were growing up, they never thought God would take them halfway around the world—or that they would end up in each other’s world.
They met at Bible college and shared the common ground of studying biblical counseling. Their hometowns, however, were a world apart. Elliot grew up in Pennsylvania, and Ruth in an African Creative Access Nation. When Ruth graduated in 2011, she had to go back to her country, but for the next several years, she and Elliot deepened their relationship long-distance. In 2015, they married in Ruth’s country and planned to live there four years before settling permanently in the US. Long-term missions wasn’t really on Elliot’s mind, but they did actively serve in the church pastored by Ruth’s dad. The longer they lived in Africa, the more Elliot saw the enormous need for local-church leaders.
Their church, and one that Ruth’s uncle pastors, were only two of a handful of Bible-teaching churches in the entire nation. The Masons realized God had them exactly where He wanted them.
Their day jobs are at a Christian school. Elliot is the pastoral-care leader, and Ruth was the school counselor for eight years. Three years ago they met a BMM church-planting couple, and together they are starting a new church. Most children who attend the school come from non-Christian families.
The Masons have forged relationships that have led some of the families to begin attending their church. When one of the school kids’ fathers heard the congregation singing worship music in the country’s various languages, he was in awe. He and his family kept coming, and most of them are now saved. It’s been a joy to disciple them.
As Global Fit missionaries, the Masons can raise supplementary support. This allows them to expand their church planting efforts while maintaining their vital ministry at the school. And that means more people discovering the gospel, and more leaders to strengthen the growing church.
