Name a sport, and David has either played it or is open to playing it. That’s how much he loves athletics. As a 19-year-old, David wondered how God might use him in the future. His sports abilities were very strong, but he couldn’t see how God could use them in ministry. David decided to pray about it.

In that year, he was invited to participate in a prison ministry where Christians shared the gospel through softball. Suddenly David’s love for sports made sense—God could use him after all. In 2014, David volunteered with BMM’s ¡Playball! evangelistic baseball clinic for boys in the Dominican Republic. He was hooked from day one. What an amazing experience for the gospel to unite him with the other participants and to see boys, families, and local coaches receive Christ.

David has returned to many ¡Playball! clinics since then, and in 2022, he discovered that BMM was seeking a long-term missionary to serve as “Sports Ministry Coordinator.”  The ministry meant leading international and domestic sports outreach trips and creating high-level sports camps and clinics that could advance current and future church planting efforts.

David was instantly intrigued. He had long admired missionaries and their work, and here was an opportunity for him, with his unique gifts, to also be a missionary. He considered becoming a career missionary but hesitated due to the impact on his wife’s ministry. As a Physician Assistant, Alyssa had a fruitful ministry at a crisis pregnancy center. Although the Kings felt God was leading David into sports missions, they weren’t sure He wanted Alyssa to leave behind her ministry. 

When BMM launched the Global Fit service option in 2023, the Kings’ found the perfect solution. Through Global Fit’s flexibility, David could serve in missions, and Alyssa could maintain her own ministries. The Kings envision creating combined sports/medical missions trips that David, Alyssa, and their kids could take part in. Global Fit has been a win-win for the Kings, effectively doubling their impact for the Lord.
