Eddie was in prison, slowly dying of liver disease.

On his visits to the Northeast Correctional Center in Tennessee where Eddie was imprisoned, Mike Brown (BMM Prison Ministries) shared Christ with him. He knew Eddie’s time could be short, so Mike enlisted his supporters’ prayers for Eddie’s salvation.

Kidney stones sent Eddie to the hospital for a time, but when Mike saw him next, he asked him what he thought about the things they had discussed a few weeks earlier. Eddie then told his story:

After his surgery, he was in the room alone. The pain medication was wearing off, and he heard a voice: “Will you trust me?” Eddie looked around. No one was there; he thought he was imagining it.

Some time passed, and he was in great pain and very alert. He heard the voice again: “Will you trust me?”  He answered, “Yes, Lord,” and immediately the pain went away, and he no longer needed pain medication for the remainder of his hospital stay. He said in that moment he had a peace and joy that he had never known. It was better than any drug!

Knowing Eddie had been granted a medical pardon and would soon be going home, Mike asked if he would try to get a liver transplant. With joy and peace shining through his 40-something, jaundiced face and with the confidence of knowing where his “real” home was, he said, “It really doesn’t matter either way!”

As Mike left that day, he told Eddie that he had sent 250 letters out requesting prayer for his salvation. He simply smiled and said, “It worked.”

(Eddie’s real name is not given in this article.)
