On February 13, 2011, Iosef Teglas was ordained into the gospel ministry as the first Gypsy (Roma) pastor to be installed in a BMM church plant among this Romanian people group. The ordination has been the dream of missionaries Tim and Sandy Fink since 2001, when they founded the church in the village of Osorhei. At times even they wondered if this day would come.
Growing up in a culture dominated by alcoholism, domestic violence, and child neglect, Iosef had been an angry, violent young man. His actions landed him in jail. There, God strongly convicted his heart, and Iosef cried out for deliverance, promising to follow the Lord. Released that very day, he surrendered his life to Christ and opened his home to the Finks’ new church plant. Iosef’s wife was also saved.
Iosef remained true to his promise. He was one of the first to be baptized at the Osorhei church. He grew steadily despite great trials, including the death of his son. God, the Head of the Church, was preparing Iosef to shepherd the people of God.
On that February ordination day, more than 200 Gypsies from the villages of Osorhei, Cheriu, Martihaz, and Luncsoara streamed into the Osorhei church to see Iosef become their first Roma shepherd. On Easter Sunday, Iosef was also installed as interim pastor for the Martihaz church. Since that time, at least nine souls have come to Christ and 12 new believers have expressed interest in baptism.
Iosef has worked hard to develop a good relationship with Osorhei’s mayor. Iosef’s changed life, along with those in the other Gypsy churches, has spoken a strong testimony to the local Romanian people. Once known for violence, Iosef is now a peaceful man, committed to teaching the Word of God. The name of the Osorhei church is Hope Baptist Church. The Gypsies of Romania now have hope, all because of Christ’s power to transform lives.
